After many failed attempts in the art room and by the end of the day having achieved very little I start to question 'why be an artist?' Sometimes I have no idea what direction I want to take.

Having started the day with high hopes and a vision of what I'd like to see on the canvas. I experiment with a technique that I may have seen or read about. Having no formal art training (unsure if this is a good or bad thing) I often become lost with the new approaches. I am sometimes so completely wrong that the results are less than promising. Testing and experimenting are all well and good but sometimes I wonder why I am bothering at all. Frustrated, I feel like binning everything!

Then suddenly and somehow I will start doing something and step off into a 'zone' that is magical. I see something new and exciting emerge on the canvas and am so absorbed in what I am doing that time has no meaning.

Then I know why I do this!

Went to Cooktown Community Centre to start a painting. Using Atelier Interactive Acrylics in three primary colours and white - pthalo blue, quinacridome magenta, transparent yellow and titanium white - to produce all the colours I need. Trying to keep it simple. Working on tonal values I have laid down the first 'coat' of paint and will do more on this next week. Am happy I have the image I wanted.

Want this painting to produce a feeling of peacefulness.

These drawings and sketches are from scrapbooks I have used over the last few years. I was looking back at them the other day looking for inspiration. Sometimes I find they look better than I remember - and sometimes not! I often look through art magazines and get ideas for compositions and do sketches of an art work. I don't intend any breach of copyright or to copy another artists work or claim it is my own however some art works are such good examples of composition or use of negative space that I explore the layout of the work by doing a thumnail sketch. All part of learning to become a better artist! Well that's the plan anyhow.

Life Drawing Resumed - Session Six

The Life Drawing Class had our sixth session this evening at the gallery. Still very hot even at 7pm but once we got going we got into the drawing mode again. These are two sketches. I didn't complete them - would have needed longer or repeat of pose but am happy enough for the satge I am at. Tried the coloured pastels over a charcoal outline drawing and got an undefined figure which I think I could have made more detailed given the time. It is still a lot of fun. I think the class will be on again next week. I 'm not going any more for now as I need to get started on painting for the Cooktown School of Art Society Annual Exhibition that is held in June. 21st Century Kids Summer Festival On Tour in Cooktown on Saturday 15th January 2011.

Kids made their own bird species using shredded paper and bird templates created by the artist.. These pictures show the wonderful results of a little imagination. Each bird in it's nest was labeled with the birds name, habitat, foods eaten, and behaviours. Australian artist Fiona Hall translated her interest in the migratory patterns of birds and nest-making into a hands-on activity. I had a fun day assisting with this kids art activity.

An art activity by artist Tony Albert invited all earthlings to become honorary citizens of the Alien Nation — but not before passing the citizenship test! New Zealand artist Campbell Patterson had kids think of funny activities they could perform. The kids were enthusiastic and the short video clips will be made into a performance art film to be uploaded to Cooktown Art Blog and Youtube!

Artist and poet John Pule had the kids drawing word paintings in a collaborative way on large art paper.

Inspired by a Brazilian tradition, artist Rivane Neuenschwander invited visitors to select and tie people’s wishes to their wrists. According to the tradition, the wish is granted when the ribbon eventually falls off.

Some put ribbons in their hair which looked great as well!

I found some Atelier Interactive Acrylic paints for a great price on eBay so got 10 tubes to extend my range of earthy colours.

See the website for more infor on these paints. These are all series one. This is a dual purpose acrylic and can be used for traditional painting techniques like oil paints as it extendes the wet in wet blending ability. I am still learning about how best to blend them and find in the tropics that being under a fan in the heat dries them very quickly but if I re-wet them in time they are able to be blended.

Many You-tube videos have instructions on how to use the acrylic paints in this way. I have embeded one here you may find useful.

Started a new painting today. Still working on seascape but this gives me variety and makes painting more interesting. So far have just laid in the under-painting following the tonal values and some colour indicators. When looking at the painting against the photo I can pick up errors in perspective and shapes but I still like the overall 'feel' of the painting over the photo. More painterly! You can see the dark red ground that I used in sealing the canvas showing in unpainted areas of the canvas which made it easier to decide on tonal values.

Life Drawing Class - Week V - Tonal Values

This weeks Life Drawing Class was the final one for 2010. We'll commence again after Christmas and New Year starting on Monday 17th January at 7pm in the gallery. I am enjoying the life model and find it much more fun than photos or still life in improving my drawings. Still have a way to go but this weeks I was happy with some improvement in contours of head, hands and feet.

We used ceiling spotlights to create more shadows and tried to do 3D modelling using values of dark, light and mid tones.

Acrylic Seascape Progress - Darks of Foreground

After a week and a half feeling ill I have finally been able to return to the foreground of the acrylic seascape started at the Ross Franzi Art Workshop on Sat 27th & Sun 28th November!

So without the benefit of a teacher I am following the technique Ross taught us in laying in the darks first. I started on the dark foliage but then noticed I was just 'blobbing' away with the brush which will NOT make realistic shapes. I got my head sorted and started to concentrate on placing the dark leaves by looking at the negative spaces. I will post updates as I go.

Life Drawing Class - Week II - Contor Drawing and Proportions

We had our second life drawing class last night. We are all enjoying the class and the chance to have a live model. Our model can hold a pose wonderfully well which makes it a little easier for budding artists!

We did three short 5 minute poses to warm up then a longer 20 minute pose to try and get a more complete figure drawing. We concentrated on contours and proportions this week and some tonal shading. I had such trouble with the hands, feet and face but overall I felt happy with the figure pose though mostly the proportions kept changing - it is all one model - she gained or lost weight instantly?!

It is still a lot of fun and I can't wait to continue next week!

I used gesture drawing to capture line of action of the pose, then filled in the contours with some tonal shading. Taken from a picture of a live model on the internet so not as good as having the live model in front of you and having to draw from a small image is different but the exercises we'ver done in the class have helped. It was easier than others I've done in the past. Mmmmm I think the art books may be right about learning to draw from figure drawing being very useful.

First Life Drawing Class - Gesture Drawing

Attended Life Drawing Class yesterday evening at Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery. It was a good way to free up my drawing.For this first class we did gesture drawing - quick studies to capture a series of poses by the model in a short amount of time. A good exercise to begin. The model held a pose for 30 seconds up to several minutes. By doing quick scribbles to show the movement of the body we were able to loosely record the entire figure and hopefully capture action, structure and overall orientation rather than any specific details. It is so tempting to go for detailed contours and harder than I thought it would be to do less detail. Will have to do more homework!

No-knead Wholemeal Bread - My First Attempt!

Wow! This no-knead bread recipe works. I think it turned out great. Crusty outer and soft inner with a nice wholemeal flavour. Great with butter, honey, vegemite or gerkin as a topping. The recipe is:

No-Knead Bread Recipe. 3 cups flour, 1/4 tsp instant yeast. 1 and 1/2 tsp salt. Mix well. Add 1 1/2 cup water. Pull all together to make a dough. Cover 12 to 18 hours hours at room temperature. Will then look bubbly and stringy. Flour the bench and pour dough onto bench. Fold over x 4 sides into middle. Sprinkle a little wheat bran or flour onto a clean tea-towel and place the dough on with seam side under and smooth side up. More flour over the top. Wrap in towel and leave 1 & 1/2 hours more. Open towel. Place Smooth side down into a preheated cast iron or pyrex dish, lid on in super hot oven 230 degrees C. Cook with lid on for 30 mins then lid off for a further 15 - 20 mins until coloured on top.
Variation. Put gladwrap on a wetted bench so it won't move. Sprinkle gladwrap with lts of corn mean or flour. Put dough on and spread to a slipper shape. Lift gladwrap and put dough on floured baking sheet. Cover with a teatowel for 2 hours then into a hot oven 220 degrees C for 35 mins

Giant Spotted Sea Cucumber Sculpture

Did up this picture of a Giant Spotted Sea Cucumber Sculpture as an example of what we probably don't want in front of the new Cooktown Events Centre. I used photoshop and collage and the Wacom Bamboo tablet to draw and Adobe Photoshop to colour and enhance. The Cooktown Local News published it in black and white and it was rather effective looking. See if we get the respose - people giving feedback on what public art they would like to see instead.

Judy Pomroy Creative Acrylic Painting Workshop in Cooktown

The Judy Pomroy Creatice Acrylic Painting Workshop was held in Cooktown on the week-end of 17th and 18th April at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery. It was a great success. Thanks to a Regional Arts Development Fund grant from Arts Queensland and Cook Shire Council the Cooktown School of Art Society was able to acquire such a renowned artist as Judy Pomroy (see her website at http://www.judyzart.com/) to teach different ways of using acrylic paints and mediums to produce imaginative and exciting paintings. This was Judy's first visit to Cooktown and she would love to return again. Judy has an Art Studio in Currumbin Valley and shares her art skills with beginners or experienced artists by helping them explore creativity in watercolors and mixed media. Her enthusiasm and approach truly inspired her Cooktown class to produce some amazing paintings. Later this year she is off to Italy to run workshops and hold an exhibition.

Have a new web site I am using to produce some interesting pics. The site is http://solaas.com.ar/dreamlines/index.htm and if you input a word or words then it generates dream images by searching the web and finding photos that relate to the words you input. Then the program 'makes; an image that is dreamy looking - blurred. I used the print screen key and pasted in Windows Paint Program. Then I can save any image I like.

Had a quiet week-end and now the start of a new week. Making crazy YouTube and Jib Jab videos. Maybe going troppo! Used a still frame screen capture from a video of 'Panda Sushi' from the You Tuber called runnyrunny999 and then altered it in Adobe Photoshop by merging the still with a real Panda photo. Loaded the result to Crazy Talk Animation Program and animated it with a recorded Volvo Driver song that I had enhanced in AVG Audio Editor. Produced a avi video from this then converted to MP4 format and uploaded to You Tube as a response video. You can see the results at You Tube by clicking the link. Am I going crazy!

CCAA History

In January 1991 a public gathering led to the formation of the Cooktown Creative Arts Association. Their first meeting was on 13th February, 1991.

Many workshops and classes have been held over the years, including design, drawing, wood carving, poetry, art history, painting, life drawing, silk painting and stained glass to name a few.

In the beginning classes were held at the school, CWA hall, members’ homes and Gungarde hall. After the enormous success of an exhibition of local art and craft run by the Cooktown Regional Action Group, the group took on the Art-space in lower ground floor of Kindergarten.

In September 2001 the Kindy moved so CCAA obtained the lease and the new Art and Craft Shop was open! Located at the Old Cooktown Railway Station in Charlotte Street it is staffed by artists and volunteers. The Art-space beneath is in use for workshops and with a gas kiln now installed, for firing pottery.

The shop provides local artists with a source of income, as well as a wonderful venue to showcase their talents.

Wood work, furniture, paintings, jewellery, stained glass, quilts, baskets, silk paintings, T-shirts, post cards, etched glass and photographs are tastefully presented in this space.

Friendly staff are at hand to welcome customers as they browse through the shop. Supporting local arts and crafts is easy with such a marvelous range produced.

Meetings are 4.30pm the last Friday of each month. Artspace is available for use. Ph 4069 5794

Have posted photos on the Cooktown Art Blog showing the fun day we had at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery on Saturday with the Kid's Asia Pacific Triennial or APT6 On Tour. The Queenland Art Gallery - Gallery of Modern Art supplied all the materials for us to provide seven hands on art activities and one computer interactive graphic program plus DVD's showing three short art films. The parents and kids loved the activities. Imagination and creativity was very evident in the resulting art works.

Step 4 record a Cheetah sound file by playing sound file on line while live recording.
Step 5 Use Crazy talk to animate the picture and save as avi file
Step 6 Use AVS Video Converter Program to convert avi file to MP4 format file.
Step 7 Upload to You Tube!
Step 8 Tweet mugglesam re uploaded video.
Step 9 Embed the You Tube video in this blog post!

Colour Theory Art Workshop

Have been to a Colour Theory Art Workshop by Elizabeth Johns at the Cooktown School of Art Society gallery. We are having a series of three three hour lessons over three weeks. We meet Saturday afternoons from 1pm - 4pm. Had the first lesson - 'Creating a Colour Wheel - on 7th November 2009. Excellent to go back to basics.

Well I did something artistic! I changed the blog header picture and added some of my art work and some digitally painted text. Looks a little messy but as it took a while to do I will leave it for now and mull over what I need to do to create a better one!

Have a pile of half finished paintings in the 'art' room. This week have been procrastinating by helping in the garden and doing some cooking. Well at least the results were worth it!

Musings of a Wanna-Be Artist!

Well I have just been going through my photos of art works and have posted some to this blog. I look back on the many different styles I have and am still trying out. Different mediums - acrylic, pastel (chalk and oil), watercolour (paints and pencils), oil (traditional, water soluble and genesis), mixed media, charcoal, graphite; sizes from miniature to rather large and on many different supports - gallery wrap canvas, art board, papers, wood and even wet sandpaper from the hardware shop! Still find it all facinating and want to continue.

I have stepped aside from covering the role of Secretary and Treasurer for the Cooktown School of Art Society on and off over the last three years and will just do the web site and blog - visit http://cooktownart.com.au/ and http://cooktownart.blogspot.com/ to see the art! Now I have no excuses! I need more brush time as an artist friend of mine says!

Did this for 2009 Cooktown School of Art Society Annual Art Exhibition - Contemporary Section. Judge said "Like the queen said to Rolf Harris about her portrait - it is very colourful!"

The bird is a Wompoo Pigeon and we have them on our block. They are very shy birds.

Paradise Flower Oil Painting Stage 1

Stage 1 of a 'Bird of Paradise' Flower.

Size about 8 x 10 inch

Using Genesis Oil paints. I used an old watercolour painting on 300gsm watercolour paper that hadn't turned out - you can see the shapes and texture in the background. Placed a cut-out of the paradise flower from a photo I took as a template and washed on oil paint (mixed colours with overall grey made up of scrapings from used palette) thinned with odourless solvent.

Started with some colour in background - leaves and stems - to set the tones. Washed in white and yellow in correct shapes as a base for glazing in colours later. Allowed to dry.
